Found solitary or in groups, on ground or on rotted wood in mixed forests, especially oak.
Cap: White or pale brown/gray, dry, finely cracked in age; flesh white to pale yellow, slowly staining pink, blue, or yellow and becoming spongy. Pores: Lemon-yellow, stain greenish-blue, then brown. Stalk: White, sometimes yellow at top, may have reddish tint to base in age; often with white mycelium at base (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
