Found solitary or in groups on ground in oak-pine forests.
Cap: Yellow-brown to orange-brown, often with orange center in age; smooth/slightly wrinkled/pitted; sticky, slimy when fresh; convex to broadly convex; cap turns cherry or orange-red with application of KOH or NH4OH, flesh negative with both. Pores: Pale olive-yellow or greenish-gray; may stain brown. Stalk: White or yellow, may have reddish or tan tones; scurfy with tiny scales (red-brown in age); equal or tapers up, frequently curved (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
