Grows throughout Maryland, but is most common in the Piedmont and mountains. Found in dry uplands but grows best in rich, well-drained soils of lower slopes.

Medium to large tree with tight, darkish bark. Inner bark is yellowish. Leaves are very variable in shape and lobing, dark green and glossy above, but lighter and somewhat hairy below, with tufts of brownish hairs in the axils of the veins. Acorn is about half covered by the cup, which has loosely overlapping scales in the upper part and a narrow, loose fringe at the top. Buds are large, five-angled, and very hairy in winter.

Host plant for various moth species including Buck Moth, Banded Tussock Moth, American Dagger Moth, and Ashy Meganola Moth.
