Fruiting body: White to pale yellow, aging to yellow-brown; fan-shaped overlapping clusters; unpleasant odor (likened in some sources to spoiled ham). Fertile surface: Whitish to yellow-brown; crowded spines with lacerated tips to 3/4" (20 mm).
Found in dense overlapping clusters in wounds of living hardwoods, especially maple. (J. Solem, pers. comm.)
