Haplotaenium minutum (Ralfs) T. Bando
Kingdom Plantae   >   Division Charophyta   >   Class Conjugatophyceae   >   Order Desmidiales   >   Family Desmidiaceae   >   Genus Haplotaenium

Description:

Haplotaenium minutum is a microscopic desmid (green alga) with an elongated cell and a central suture. It differs from the similar-looking Pleurotaenium species in that it has a central, plate-like plastid (chloroplast) as opposed to several parietal plastids. Haplotaenium also lacks the apical vacuole typical of Pleurotaenium.

Where to find:

Haplotaenium minutum can be found in freshwater ponds, lakes and wetlands throughout Maryland. It may be found in the plankton (free floating) but is more often found among plants (metaphyton) or among the detritus on the bottom of calm wetlands.

There are 2 records in the project database.
