Description:

A relatively large Amanita up to 25 cm tall and with a cap up to 20 cm in diameter. The cap is orange or yellowish with a darker center and lighter margin. The cap typically has many yellow warts and a lined margin. There is often a persistent partial veil below the cap. The base of the stalk is somewhat inflated and there will typically be remnants of the volva on the stalk (Bessette et al. 2018, Field Guide to Mushrooms of the Carolinas). This species is known to be poisonous.

Where to find:

The distribution in Maryland is uncertain. In the Carolinas it is reported to be common on the Coastal Plain and Piedmont (Bessette et al. 2018).
