Status:

Found along the western Atlantic coast from Nova Scotia to the Florida Keys, where it prefers sandy bottoms.

Description:

Note the large head, tapered body, and those large, wing-like pectoral fins. The three lower rays of its pelvic fins are specially adapted feelers, one might even call them "legs", with which they walk across the sandy bottoms they prefer.

Relationships:

Feed upon a large variety of worms, bivalves, amphipods, and crustaceans.
