Silver-bordered Fritillary, a widespread species of the north, is a beautiful denizen of marshes, bogs, and wetland habitats, where its host plants may be found. In Maryland, it is found rarely through northern and central portions of the state, but appears to be absent from much of the coastal plain. The flight periods are in June, and again in late August (Butterflies of Maryland: A Biological Summary and Checklist by Lynn Davidson & Richard Smith). it is ranked as S3 (watch list) in Maryland.
Uses violets as larval hosts, especially those associated with wetlands, such as Marsh Blue Violet (Viola cucullata), Small White Violet (V. macloskeyi pallens), Primrose-leaved Violet (V. primulifolia), Striped White Violet (V. striata), and Common Blue Violet (V. sororia) (Allen, 1997).
