According to the Department of Entomology at Iowa State University, the European Corn Borer was first found in the United States near Boston in 1917. The moth arrived in the US through the importation of corn from Hungary and Italy that was used to make brooms. It has spread to most of the US east of the Rockies. The European Corn Borer causes major damage to corn crops with estimated losses to US farmers over 1 billion dollars.
