Common Liverwort Marchantia polymorpha L.
Kingdom Plantae   >   Division Bryophyta   >   Class Marchantiopsida   >   Order Marchantiales   >   Family Marchantiaceae   >   Genus Marchantia

Description:

Common Liverwort is relatively large for a liverwort (about 5 mm wide and sometimes several centimeters in length). The plant is dichotomously branched and grows flat against substrate. The plants are relatively thick and sometimes produce distinctive reproductive structures like gametophores (the umbrella-shaped structure) and gemmae cups.

Where to find:

Common Liverwort may be found throughout Maryland. It can be found on damp soil, sand or gravel in gardens and at the edges of roads and parking lots. Common Liverwort is very common in greenhouses and nurseries. Consequently it is transported and introduced to gardens and roadsides frequently.

There are 20 records in the project database.
