The Last Day of the Turkey Point Bird Count!
It’s the last day of the Turkey Point Bird Count! The count has far exceeded our high expectations and we’re excited to dig into the data from here. Of course this year’s data is our baseline, and much of the value will come from repeating this important count year after year.
Amazing job to lead counter Daniel Irons. Can we get a round of applause please? Truly phenomenal work!
Thanks to our alternate counters – Tim Carney, Sean McCandless, Dan Small – who covered the count on the rare occasion Daniel accepted breaks (only to bird elsewhere one presumes). Special thanks to Sean McCandless for his invaluable support to the count, including sharing local insights and expertise. Thanks to Jim Stasz for crazy ideas and direct support. Thanks to Matt Hafner and Tom Johnson for expert input on plans and protocols. Thanks to MBP’s Jim Brighton and John Hall for their leadership and project management. Thanks to NorthBay Adventure. Thanks to Maryland State Parks and the staff at Elk Neck SP / Turkey Point. Special thanks to our sponsors the Maryland Ornithological Society and the Sheldon & Audrey Katz Foundation. Thanks to MBP developer Jacqueline Palacios for creating MBP’s beautiful special project pages and our first MBP blog (bravo!).
Thanks to all of you for your interest in Maryland birds and the biodiversity on which they depend. If like us you’re ecstatic with having formal Maryland fall counts year after year, please consider a donation via the TPBC page here: https://marylandbiodiversity.com/project/turkeypoint/. While there you can check out live-updating totals and links to explore the full season’s data. We’ll also put together a nice summary of the season.

We are all in for 2022!
