A Cybister fimbriolatus larva eating a Red-spotted Newt in Frederick Co., Maryland (7/9/2013). Richard Orr says about the encounter, "This was a battle that neither side could win. The large aquatic beetle larva (Cybister fimbriolatus) is on the left. At 75mm (almost 3 inches) and with powerful jaws (see insert at lower left corner) they are major predators in the Catoctin Mountain ponds. Normally a salamander would stand little chance against this aquatic hunter. However, the Red-spotted Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens) carries an extremely toxic venom under its skin which did the beetle larva in. Both are dead. The tail of the salamander has blackened and projects below the beetle larva." Photo by Richard Orr.
