Found solitary or scattered on ground in oak or oak/pine forests.
Cap: Pale tan/yellowish/gray, flat becoming funnel-shaped in age; margin uplifted and very pleated; both white flesh and white latex stain rosy-pink.
Gills: Color of cap, may be slightly decurrent, distant, stain rosy-pink. Stalk: Smooth, dry, cream with darker stains in age. (J. Solem, pers. comm.)
Similar to Lactarius fumosus, both species have white latex which stains the flesh pinkish. The gills of this species, however, are more distant and broad (L. Biechele, pers. comm.).
