Found solitary or in groups on trunks or logs of hardwoods, primarily oaks.
Fruiting body: Mass of small overlapping hoof-shaped caps rising from a common core; dull yellow-brown with tan petal-shaped margins; slightly velvety, radially wrinkled, leathery to rigid depending on age; each cap laterally fused. Pores: Purplish-gray to gray-brown (in age) (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
