Found solitary or in groups on decaying hardwoods.
From light brown to dark red-brown with dark center when young; smooth, dull or shiny; circular/irregular; typically funnel-shaped to slightly depressed; margin paler than rest of body, inrolled when young, wavy or lobed in age; flesh white, tough. Pores: White to pale buff; decurrent. Stalk: May be red-brown above, black below--or not; equal or tapers down, may be swollen at point of attachment (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
