Status:

Found solitary or in groups in forests.

Description:

Cap: Pinkisk to blackish-brown, surface soon becoming cracked and scaly showing yellow-brown beneath; scales appressed to partially erect at center; convex to nearly flat; white flesh is firm and brittle. Fertile surface: Pale brown to gray spines; decurrent. Stalk: Colored like cap with blue-green areas near base; smooth, dry; tapers up, base swollen (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
