Mockernut Hickory Carya tomentosa (Lamarck) Nuttall    Synonyms: Carya alba, Hicoria alba.

Description:

Leaflets usually 7-9. Petiole, rachis,and lower leaf surface are hairy, or tomentose (as the species epithet "tomentosa" indicates). Terminal winter buds are large. Fruit is large and round, with a thick husk (though husk is thinner than husk in Shagbark and Shellbark hickories).

Where to find:

Grows in dry or moist woodland throughout Maryland, most commonly at lower altitudes.

Relationships:

Host plant for various butterfly species including Banded Hairstreak.

Host plant for various moth species including Walnut Sphinx Moth, Pecan Leafminer Moth, American Dagger Moth, Banded Tussock Moth, Epione Underwing Moth, Oldwife Underwing Moth, Yellow-gray Underwing Moth, Ulalume Underwing Moth (Database of World's Lepidopteran Host Plants).
