Very similar to Staghorn Sumac. Smooth Sumac has glabrous twigs and Staghorn Sumac has very hairy twigs.
This species and other sumacs in the genus Rhus are host plants for the Sumac Flea Beetle. Known to be a host plant for Cecropia Moth (Database of the World's Lepidopteran Hostplants).
