In Maryland, Striped Maple is mostly a tree of the western mountainous region. It occurs mainly in forest understory.
Striped Maple gets its name from the bark of young specimens, which is greenish and marked with white vertical stripes. This species can easily be confused with Mountain Maple, another understory species that is found mainly in mountainous areas. Mountain Maple lacks the striped bark of Striped Maple, however, and its leaves tend to be smaller, narrower, and less shallowly lobed than Striped Maple's. The flowers of both species appear after the leaves in spring. The flowers of Striped Maple are arranged in terminal, drooping racemes, whereas in Mountain Maple they are in erect panicles. The fruits (samaras) of Striped Maple are green, with wings that meet at an angle of 90-120 degrees. Flowering is May-June, fruit ripening June-September ((Brown and Brown, 1972).
