Status:

Shumard Oak approaches its northern limit here in Maryland, where it is listed as state rare (S2) and threatened.

Description:

One of the larger red oaks.

Where to find:

A lowland species found in well-drained soils along waterways on the Atlantic Coastal Plain. It also occurs in the Maryland Piedmont along the Potomac River, including at Great Falls, where the trees are very large and many are dying.

Relationships:

Host plant to the Buck Moth (Database of the World's Lepidopteran Hostplants).
