"New Brunswick to North Dakota, south to southern New England, Long Island, North Carolina, locally to Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas" (Reed, 1964). Black Willow is the most common willow in Maryland, occurring in every county in the state.
There is a clade of bees, including Andrena macoupinensis, that gather pollen only from willows. "…[W]illows are one of the secret powerhouses of pollen and nectar in North America. Stands of which stick around for centuries and create consistent forage for these bees, which may be why willow flowers are green, lacking the color signal of other, more desperate, flowers." (S. Droege, pers. comm.).
