Free-flying birds were reported around Davidsonville and on the Patuxent River in 1973. These were apparently traced back to an exotic collection that bred locally and might have wandered in the immediate area. The species is included here for completeness and because the birds were discussed in one or more publications. Whooper Swan is not established in Maryland or included in the official checklist of Maryland birds. See Maryland Birdlife 39:3-4 and MD/DCRC #2006-262.
