Like other underwater "grasses" of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, Claspingleaf Pondweed is not a true grass. Instead it is a member of the Pondweed Family (Potamogetonaceae).
Claspingleaf Pondweed is one of the most easily recognizable underwater "grasses" in the Chesapeake Bay due to its small, oval leaves that grow directly from the stem.
Claspingleaf Pondweed is sometimes called Redhead Grass because Redhead ducks feed on it.
