An important plant of salt marsh habitats bordering the Chesapeake Bay and Coastal Bays. Black Needlerush reaches its northern limits along the Chesapeake Bay. It can be found along the Atlantic Coast south to Florida and along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas.
The only rush species that grows to four feet tall in salt marshes of the Chesapeake Bay and Coastal Bays. It typically grows above the high tide mark.

Marsh Wrens, Clapper Rails, and Marsh Rice Rats live in dense stands of Black Needlerush.
