Found solitary or in clusters on living and dead hardwoods.
Fruiting body: Kidney-shaped with a shiny, lumpy surface. Most will be solid red to red brown or with yellow or white zones near margin; but some are an ochre color. Pores: White becoming dingy brown and usually bruise brown; tiny. Stalk: Absent (sessile), or when present, central or on one side of cap.
Note: All of the species of Ganoderma in Maryland growing on hardwoods are included on this page because mycologists do not agree on how many species there are. (A 2017 key has nine species in the southeastern United States, which includes Maryland.) There do not seem to be molecular studies on all of the species in this genus, which would clarify the situation. Ganoderma lucidum sensu stricto (Curtis) Karstis is a European species (according to the molecular studies). See http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pp333.
