Clam shrimp species described by N. T. Mattox in 1953 based on USNM specimens from Maryland (Mattox, 1953). Type collected on Bear Island, Montgomery Co. (Holotype, male, USNM #93439; paratypes, both sexes, USNM #93440 and in Mattox's collection).
See species description in Mattox, 1953 and USNM type specimens.
Known from small temporary pools on Bear Island in the Potomac River, Montgomery Co. and Lilypons Water Gardens, Frederick Co., Maryland. Pools on Bear Island had a recorded temperature variation from 71 to 88F and pH variation from 6.4 to 6.7. "In these collections there were 90 females and 9 males, indicating a greater ration of females than males as seems to be the case for other species of the genus." (Mattox, 1953)
Look for clam shrimp in summer and fall in very transient water bodies, occasionally in rain-filled puddles and even tire ruts (B. Norden, pers. comm.).
