The phylogenetic placement of the genus Netrium is somewhat uncertain, but it represents an early-branching (ancient) lineage in the Zygnematophyceae.
Netrium digitus is a unicellular green alga with relatively large, cylindrical to fusiform cells. The large chloroplast is axile with many longitudinal ridges with fimbriate edges.
Netrium digitus is relatively common in lentic freshwater habitats throughout Maryland (lakes, wetlands, slow moving streams)
