Status:

The phylogenetic placement of the genus Netrium is somewhat uncertain, but it represents an early-branching (ancient) lineage in the Zygnematophyceae.

Description:

Netrium digitus is a unicellular green alga with relatively large, cylindrical to fusiform cells. The large chloroplast is axile with many longitudinal ridges with fimbriate edges.

Where to find:

Netrium digitus is relatively common in lentic freshwater habitats throughout Maryland (lakes, wetlands, slow moving streams)
