Thorny Olive is a fast growing, tough, evergreen shrub native to Asia. It grows to 12-15 feet high. It has been reported from only a few locations in Maryland so far, but has the potential to become invasive.
The branchlets usually have thorns. The leaves have entire to wavy margins, and the upper surfaces are waxy and green, whereas the under surfaces are silvery and scaly. Flowering is in the fall. The flowers are bell shaped and pale yellow to white. The fruits are red drupes with silver scales.
