Description:

Fruiting bodies (sporothecae) are bright red when young and mature to a dark brown. The tips of the fruiting bodies are acuminate to apiculate at maturity and round in apical view. Subspecies ferruginosa has sporothecal tips that are rounded to acute at maturity.
