Sichuan Pepper differs from our native Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum americanum) in several ways. The most obvious is that Sichuan Pepper has a winged petiole and rachis while the native Prickly Ash does not. Additionally, Sichuan Pepper has a terminal inflorescence while Prickly Ash has axillary inflorescences (see Zhang & Hartley 2008, Fl. China 11: 53–66.; Weakley et al. 2012, Flora of Virginia).
