Gonatozygon brebissonii De Bary
Kingdom Plantae   >   Division Charophyta   >   Class Conjugatophyceae   >   Order Desmidiales   >   Family Gonatozygaceae   >   Genus Gonatozygon

Description:

Gonatozygon brebissonii is a microscopic freshwater green alga. The cells are solitary or, rarely, forming short, fragile chains of 2 to about 6 cells. The cell wall is minutely granulate (rarely with very short spines). The apex of the cell is capitate, with an obvious constriction just below the apex.

Where to find:

Gonatozygon brebissonii is a minor component of many freshwater communities and may be found in lakes, ponds and wetlands. It can be difficult to detect because it is physically small, it is similar in shape and color to other microscopic algae, and it is often present in low abundance.
