This species and other Leptogaster are small, slender robber flies with long abdomens and long legs. The details of coloration of the legs are often important for specific identification. Leptogaster brevicornis has the hind legs prominently banded orange and black (Norm Lavers' robber fly site). This species is the most common member of the genus in Virginia (Bedell, 2010).
