This species and other Leptogaster are small, slender robber flies with long abdomens and long legs. The details of coloration of the legs are often important for specific identification. Leptogaster virgata has similarly banded hind legs to L. brevicornis, but on this species, the hind tibiae are primarily blackish. It also shows a pale silvery-gray thorax, with several distinctive black stripes (Norm Lavers' robber fly site).
