Rainbow Snake (Farancia erytrogramma erytrogramma) is a brightly-patterned aquatic snake considered to be state-endangered in Maryland. Within the state, it appears restricted to the western coastal plain (Maryland DNR site). Rainbow Snakes are largely nocturnal, and typically spend most of the day in submerged burrows or hollow trees. The species prefers clear bodies of water, including lakes, slow-moving creeks and rivers, cypress swamps, even tidal marshes. They have been found to feed heavily on eels. Rainbow Snakes are occasionally observed crossing roads at night, or found beneath cover objects (Tennant, 2003).
