Southern Blue Monkshood is a twining perennial that grows in low woods and on damp slopes in rich deciduous forests, mainly in the Appalachian Mountains with disjunct populations in Indiana and Missouri. In Maryland, Southern Blue Monkshood is endangered by habitat loss and excessive browsing by White-tailed Deer. According to MD DNR, the only known populations of Southern Blue Monkshood in the state are in Garrett County in rich, montane alluvial woods and river banks. In the US Herbarium at the Smithsonian there are specimens of Southern Blue Monkshood from Montgomery County that were collected in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
In August, Southern Blue Monkshood produces several hooded, violet-blue flowers in loose clusters at the tip of a stem that is slender, weak, and commonly reclining or climbing, often supported by other plants. Fruit is a follicle.
