Seashore Saltgrass is a very common salt tolerant grass that is found in salt marshes of the Coastal Plain. Seashore Saltgrass has a coastal distribution along the East Coast of North America. West of the Mississippi River Seashore Saltgrass grows in inland saline habitats as well as coastal salt habitats.
Seashore Saltgrass is an erect grass that rarely grows above 12" tall. It is strongly rhizomatous, often growing in dense patches.
Seashore Saltgrass can easily be found growing along roadsides that run through salt marshes. It is abundant along Elliot Island Road in Dorchester County.
Seashore Saltgrass is a host plant for Salt Marsh Skipper and possibly Aaron's Skipper. It has been proven that waterfowl often carry the seeds of Seashore Saltgrass in their feathers and on their feet. Brant, Bufflehead, and American Black Duck are a few species of waterfowl that are known to carry Seashore Saltgrass seeds in the feathers. Host to the fungus Ash Rust.
