Swamp Sunflower is a perennial that grows to 3-6 feet tall. It has narrow leaves that are thin, hard, and rigid, and pointed at the tip. The large, showy blooms have 10-20 narrow ray flowers and reddish to purplish disk flowers.
Swamp Sunflower grows in wet, acid soils of bogs and swampy woodland. It is frequent on the Coastal Plain but not elsewhere in Maryland.
As one of our latest blooming sunflowers, with a flowering period from late summer to early fall, Swamp Sunflower provides nectar for pollinators, including migrating Monarch butterflies, at a time of year when food is becoming scarcer. Its abundant seed provides food for birds and other animals in winter.
