Locally common across the state in open wet areas. Blooms from mid-July into September.
Maryland's most common ironweed. There are three other vernonia species on the Maryland plant list. Glaucous Ironweed (Vernonia glauca) has much wider leaves that are often glaucous above compared with the long lanceolate leaves of New York Ironweed. To separate New York Iron weed from Giant Ironweed (Vernonia gigantea) you have to look at the involucral bracts of the flowers. Giant Ironweed has much wider involucral bracts than the narrow to almost threadlike involucral bracts of New York Ironweed.
Host to the bee species Melissodes denticulata.
Host plant for various moth species including the Eupatorium Borer Moth, Salt Marsh Moth, Partenice Tiger Moth, Ruby Tiger Moth, Ironweed Borer Moth, Red Groundling Moth, Yellow-striped Armyworm Moth, Evergreen Bagworm Moth, Ironweed Plume Moth, and the Tufted Apple Bud Moth (Database of the World's Lepidopteran Hostplants).
There are 415 records in the project database.
