Mud Salamander (Pseudotriton montanus) is a large, chunky reddish or brownish salamander with black spots, rather similar to Red Salamander, but with brownish eyes. As its name suggests, Mud Salamander frequents muddy streams or seeps, while Red generally prefers clearer, flowing water. This salamander ranges through the coastal plain of Maryland, on the western and eastern shores. They are known for being very secretive, and their difficult, often turbid habitats can make the species difficult to observe. This salamander breeds in early autumn.
