Baltimore Flavoparmelia Lichen (Flavoparmelia baltimorensis) in Baltimore Co., Maryland (1/23/2010). Per Richard: "Lichens are fungi that have co-evolved with algae to the point that the fungus can no longer live without the algae. The lichen provides a nice environment for the algae and then harvests the edges of the algae as food. In mid-winter in Maryland, lichens are one of the few organisms that one can still find as easy as any other time of the year." Photo by Richard Orr. (MBP list)
