Checkered White (Pontia protodice) is generally a somewhat scarce species in our region, frequenting fields and other open habitats. This white butterfly shows scattered gray or charcoal markings, stronger on females. It may be found on the wing in Maryland in late June, with another brood flying from late August until early October (Butterflies of Maryland: A Biological Summary and Checklist by Lynn Davidson & Richard Smith; Brock & Kaufman 2003).
This species utilizes various plants in the mustard family (Brassicaceae) as larval food plants, including pepperweed (Lepidium virginicum) and the nonnative shepard's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris).
There are 53 records in the project database.
