Cicindela formosa is associated with deep, well-drained deposits of sand, often away from water. This species can be very common in sandy habitats in the New Jersey Pine Barrens or in the Midwest. In Maryland, however, the species appears to be quite uncommon and limited in distribution. Most localities are old records, and most appear to no longer be extant. A more recent site discovered in western Maryland by Glaser in 1995 held a very small population of under 20 adults, and was in danger of extirpation due to plant succession (Knisley & Schultz, 1997).
