Variegated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia) is mostly southern in distribution, but ranges across the entirety of Maryland, in meadows, roadsides, gardens and other open habitats (Brock & Kaufman, 2003). This generally common species is on the wing in Maryland primarily in late summer into autumn (August-mid October)(Butterflies of Maryland: A Biological Summary and Checklist by Lynn Davidson & Richard Smith).
Uses variety of plant species, including violets, passionflower, flax, and other species as larval host plants.
