Sable Clubtail Stenogomphurus rogersi Gloyd, 1936In need of conservation  -  S2 (State rare)    Synonyms: Gomphus rogersi.
Kingdom Animalia   >   Phylum Arthropoda   >   Class Insecta   >   Order Odonata   >   Family Gomphidae   >   Genus Stenogomphurus

Status:

Sable Clubtail (Stenogomphurus rogersi) is the only Maryland representative of its genus. This interesting clubtail mostly frequents small, shady streams or creeks, with sand and gravel substrates, and riffles. They often perch on rocks, or overhanging vegetation, or on logjams. Their dark coloration and tendency to perch in shade makes them difficult to spot. In Maryland, this dragonfly is considered rare (Richard Orr's The Dragonflies and Damselflies of Maryland and the District of Columbia), though it is easily overlooked, and many populations likely remain to be discovered. It is ranked as S2 (state rare) in Maryland.

Where to find:

Try checking for this rare butterfly along the Youghiogheny River at Swallow Falls State Park, in Garrett County (Maryland Department of Natural Resources: Swallow Falls).

There are 59 records in the project database.
