The Common Green Darner (Anax junius) is one of the most common and widespread dragonflies in North America. This dragonfly is one that is recognized by many people, even those with little to no knowledge of Odonata. This species has a curious life cycle, with a migratory population which migrates northwards in spring to breed each year. The offspring of these spring migrants develop rapidly, becoming adults by the end of the summer. As fall approaches, the new generation migrates southward, often collecting in huge swarms along coasts when conditions are right. Once they have reached more southerly climes, they breed there, and a subsequent generation makes the northward migration in spring of the following year. In addition to the migratory population, there is also a resident population of Anax junius with much slower development. The two forms can even occur in the same ponds (Paulson, 2011). This species is found across all of Maryland, and spring migrants are often among the first dragonflies seen in spring in this region (Richard Orr's The Dragonflies and Damselflies of Maryland and the District of Columbia).
