This species is a planktonic dinoflagellate with two flagella. One lies in an equatorial groove (cingulum) around the cell and the other lies in a longitudinal groove (sulcus) trailing behind the cell. It has been suggested that the long arms reduce the amount of energy needed to maintain a position within the water column (Patterson, p. 74). (L. Biechele, pers. comm.)
