Ceratium hirundinella (O.F.  Müller) Dujardin
Kingdom Chromista   >   Phylum Myzozoa   >   Class Dinophyceae   >   Order Gonyaulacales   >   Family Ceratiaceae   >   Genus Ceratium

Status:

This species is a planktonic dinoflagellate with two flagella. One lies in an equatorial groove (cingulum) around the cell and the other lies in a longitudinal groove (sulcus) trailing behind the cell. It has been suggested that the long arms reduce the amount of energy needed to maintain a position within the water column (Patterson, p. 74). (L. Biechele, pers. comm.)
