Canvasbacks breed in western Canada, Alaska, and a wide swath of the United States from Minnesota to Nevada. In the autumn, they head south, looking for open water. They winter in much of the United States, skipping the Appalachians. The Chesapeake Bay and the wide mouths of its tributaries are common wintering spots.
A good place to find Canvasbacks in the winter is on the Oakley Street waterfront in Cambridge, Dorchester County, Maryland.
Canvasbacks feed on submerged aquatic vegetation, especially American Eelgrass (also called Wild Celery).
