Brown-headed Nuthatch Sitta pusilla Latham, 1790  Synonyms: BHNU.
Kingdom Animalia   >   Phylum Chordata   >   Class Aves   >   Order Passeriformes   >   Family Sittidae   >   Genus Sitta

Status:

Common on the Eastern Shore in Loblolly Pine stands. Also common in the pine stands at Pt. Lookout, St. Mary's County. Appears to be expanding it's range to inland Loblolly Pine communities.

Description:

Maryland's smallest nuthatch. The brown cap, gray back, and white belly are diagnostic among our three nuthatch species.

Where to find:

Brown-headed Nuthatches can be found in most Loblolly Pine stands on the Eastern Shore. Stands that are coastal or growing on the edges of salt marshes are more likely hold nuthatch populations.

Relationships:

Very closely affiliated with Loblolly Pine.

There are 138 records in the project database.
