Slippery Elm Ulmus rubra Muhlenberg    Synonyms: Red Elm, Ulmus fulva.
Kingdom Plantae   >   Division Tracheophyta   >   Class Magnoliopsida   >   Order Urticales   >   Family Ulmaceae   >   Genus Ulmus

Status:

Slippery Elm and American Elm are the two most common elm species in Maryland.

Description:

Slippery Elm tends to have rougher upper leaf surfaces than does American Elm, but this is not a really reliable way to differentiate between the two species. A better criterion is the fruits and cross sections of bark slices, as explained on the American Elm species page.

Relationships:

A host plant for various moth species including American Dagger Moth and Banded Tussock Moth (Database of World's Lepidopteran Host Plants).

There are 118 records in the project database.
