Southern Red Oak Quercus falcata Michaux    Synonyms: Quercus digitata.

Description:

Moderate to large tree. The leaves are quite variable (Fernald, 1950). The terminal lobe of the leaf is often elongated and narrow, sometimes curving, or falcate(sickle-shapeed), hence the species name Quercus falcata.

Where to find:

Occurs in moist to dry woods. Common throughout the Coastal Plain, infrequent or absent in the Piedmont and mountains (Brown and Brown, 1972).

Relationships:

Has been recorded as a host plant for Banded Hairstreak.

Host plant to many moth species including the Buck Moth (Database of the World's Lepidopteran Hostplants).
